MANGROVE PLANTING AND FISH CATCH: TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN.
Livelihood recovery for fisherfolks and marine resource rehabilitation are intimately connected. As we move deeper into our post Yolanda interventions, we have learned that we cannot affect one without connecting with the other. And involving first hand the fisher folks in the rehabilitation and protection of their primary source of livelihood, would help ensure that there will be fish to catch when their boats sail out to the salty waters. This is the second time our Lat-asan beneficiaries and their families came together and planted mangrove seedlings along the coastline of their little island since iRelief extended a hand. The seedlings when they take root and stabilize, will help reinforce the existing mangrove plantation. The towering mangrove trees that lined the northern coast helped greatly in protecting the southern board from being completely ravaged by the powerful storm surges.
